City Nature Challenge 2024: Southwest Virginia's Journal

Good morning,

I’ve tagged you in this post because you are a top identifier in the Southwest Virginia area. We’re hoping you’ll participate in this year’s City Nature Challenge by helping go through the "Needs ID" observations for the Southwest Virginia project by May 5. Over 68% of our observations still need an ID! It is top iNat identifiers like you that will help increase our number of species recorded and ensure that we have high-quality data.

Have observations that you haven't uploaded? It's not too late! You can still post observations made within the April 26-29 timeframe and have them count toward the challenge until May 5.

Good afternoon! I'm tagging you because you participated in the Nature Challenge last year and we need your help to top last year's numbers in Southwest Virginia this year.

Today is the LAST DAY of the Challenge and we're at 94% of our goal for number of species observed.

Are you able to take a break and go outside to make 10 wildlife observations? Or maybe head outside this evening for a walk? If you're in Bristol, Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Norton, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, or Wise, the iNat observations will automatically count toward the Challenge.

We have until 11:59 p.m. tonight to make more wildlife observations and your participation will make a big difference.

Good morning! If you're in the Scott County area, we need your help making wildlife observations with iNat. The City (rural areas, too) Nature Challenge is happening now through Monday and we are looking for 100 more people to make observations--particularly in the Scott County area.

The Southwest Virginia Challenge (Bristol, Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Norton, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise ) is in the running to top last years wildlife observations, but we need your help. I'm tagging you in this post because you've observations in the area.

Help us find more wildlife than last year's City Nature Challenge in Southwest Virginia. All iNat observations made in Bristol, Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Norton, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise counties will automatically count in the Challenge.

We're almost half-way through the challenge and observations are rolling in. Here's how many MORE we need to reach our goal and top last year's record. Will you spread the word and help us?
• 54% of our goal accomplished: 613 more wildlife observations needed
• 57% of our goal accomplished: 278 more species needed
• 79% of our goal accomplished: 14 more people making observations needed

I hope you'll get outside this evening through Monday and snap photos in iNat of that ant on the sidewalk (it counts!) or that dandelion in your yard (it counts!) or the fly on your vehicle (it counts!). The more wild plants and animals you observe, the better!

Between Friday, April 26 and Monday, April 29, we need you to help us find as many species as possible using iNaturalist. All iNaturalist observations from Bristol, Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Norton, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise counties will automatically be counted towards the Challenge.
