City Nature Challenge 2024: Charlottesville Region's Journal

Good morning,

I’ve tagged you in this post because you are a top identifier in the Charlottesville area. We’re hoping you’ll participate in this year’s City Nature Challenge by helping go through the "Needs ID" observations for the Charlottesville Region project by May 5. Over 52% of our observations still need an ID! It is top iNat identifiers like you that will help increase our number of species recorded in the Charlottesville area and ensure that we have high-quality data.

Have observations that you haven't uploaded? It's not too late! You can still post observations made within the April 26-29 timeframe and have them count toward the challenge until May 5.

Today is the LAST DAY of the Challenge and we're so close to accomplishing our goal to top last years numbers. We need one more big push of people making wildlife observations over the next few hours.

Can you take a walk around the neighborhood or your favorite nature spot this evening and make a few more observations? Bring a friend along and teach them to use iNat.

• 70% of our goal accomplished: 950 more wildlife observations needed
• 87% of our goal accomplished: 100 more species needed
• 75% of our goal accomplished: 57 more people making observations needed

If each of you can make 10 more observations today, you'd put us past the 50% mark of our goal. Right now (9:02 a.m. Sunday) we're only 36% of our goal. The Challenge is today and tomorrow and we want to top 3,116 wildlife observations.

Our window of opportunity to tackle biodiversity loss is now and The Nature Conservancy has ambitious goals, but we need to work together. How do we prioritize biodiversity for the health of our environment, food supply, and economies if we don’t know what species live where? This is where you come in! By participating in this Challenge you can contribute to scientific data....AND learn about the natural world around you.

Between Friday, April 26 and Monday, April 29, we need you to help us find as many species as possible using iNaturalist. All iNaturalist observations from Albemarle, Charlottesville, Nelson, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Orange counties will automatically be counted towards the Challenge.

Hi everyone,

The annual City Nature Challenge is getting ready to start and we need your help! Between Friday, April 26 and Monday, April 29, we need you to help us find as many species as possible using iNaturalist. All iNaturalist observations from Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, and Orange counties will automatically be counted towards the Challenge.

I’ve tagged you in this post because you are a top observer in the Charlottesville area. It is top iNat observers like you that will really help push us ahead in number of observations made and species recorded in Virginia.

The City Nature Challenge is an international effort for people to find and document what lives in communities across the globe. There are over 650 locations participating this year so it will be great to see what everyone finds!
